Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo has criticized suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde for attempting to link his salary reinstatement to his attendance at the tribunal hearing, labeling this move as ‘unfair.’ In the courtroom, Justice Temo remarked on Pryde’s competence as a leading lawyer in Fiji, asserting that he is capable of representing himself. If necessary, Pryde has the option to seek assistance through Legal Aid.
Justice Temo highlighted a concerning financial issue regarding Pryde’s superannuation payments. Since 2012, Pryde has allegedly overpaid himself more than $288,000 in superannuation funds, which he was not entitled to claim. Temo emphasized that this amounted to theft, as Pryde’s actions were not sanctioned by the Judicial Services Commission or endorsed by the Attorney-General’s Office and the President.
Further questioning revealed that Pryde was the Chief Financial Officer within the DPP, responsible for approving financial expenditures. Justice Temo stated that without proper authorization from the JSC, there was no legitimate basis for Pryde’s monthly superannuation payments of $1,000. The payments continued from Pryde’s appointment as Solicitor-General in 2012 until July 2024, raising significant concerns about financial mismanagement.
The tribunal is currently investigating allegations of misconduct, and there are recommendations for Pryde’s removal from his position as DPP. This scrutiny follows an alleged meeting between Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum amidst an investigation concerning the latter, underscoring the serious nature of the situation.
The tribunal proceedings have been adjourned until tomorrow at 10 am, as the legal processes continue to unfold.
In summary, this situation illustrates the serious implications of alleged financial misconduct within governmental roles, with Acting Chief Justice Temo underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in public service. The ongoing tribunal reflects the judicial system’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring that justice prevails. It is a reminder of the crucial role that regulatory bodies play in maintaining the integrity of public office.
