As the 2025 Super Rugby season approaches, Ardie Savea stands out as the only player from Moana Pasifika currently seconded from New Zealand Rugby (NZR). His unique status comes as players like his older brother Julian and former Hurricanes teammate Jackson Garden-Bachop do not have contracts with any New Zealand-based Super Rugby teams.
There’s speculation that Savea’s role as a capped All Black playing for Moana Pasifika may not be an isolated incident. Reports indicate that at least two current All Blacks have expressed interest in joining the club when their NZR contracts are up for renewal. Key motivations for these potential transfers include a desire to honor their heritage, the allure of living in Auckland, and the opportunity to play alongside Savea, both at the club and national levels.
Debbie Sorensen, the interim CEO of Moana Pasifika, noted that there is “significant interest” from All Blacks in aligning with the club beyond 2025. However, she acknowledged the existing tension in negotiations, given NZR’s preference for players to stay within its five franchises. While NZR aims to retain its players, they also recognize the need to be flexible, particularly for those who have demonstrated long service, allowing for some to explore club changes on a case-by-case basis.
NZR emphasized that its priority remains the development of players eligible for national representation, while their Collective Employment Agreement does allow for the secondment of certain players to Moana Pasifika. This is intended to ensure that both player aspirations and the interests of New Zealand’s national teams are balanced, while also nurturing rugby talent in the Pacific regions.
Sorensen is optimistic about future collaboration among various entities within New Zealand rugby, stressing the importance of all parties working collectively to achieve mutual goals.
Ardie Savea’s captaincy of Moana Pasifika signals a transformative period for the team, as they aim to build on previous seasons’ challenges. With Savea at the helm, the team is focused on establishing stronger connections and accountability, which are crucial for their growth and success in the competitive arena of Super Rugby Pacific.
As the season gets underway, there is a hopeful atmosphere surrounding Moana Pasifika, driven by the promise of new talent and the team’s determination to improve its standing in the league. Savea’s leadership could very well be a pivotal factor in this journey, fostering resilience and unity among the players with the goal of turning their fortunes around.
