Investigators have made significant progress in the investigation of the recent Air India crash that claimed 260 lives, according to a statement from India’s civil aviation ministry. Data has been successfully downloaded from the flight recorders, marking a crucial step in unraveling the details of what is now recognized as the deadliest aviation accident in over a decade.
The tragic event involved a Boeing 787 Dreamliner that crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, on its way to London. All but one of the 241 passengers on board perished, as well as additional casualties on the ground. The retrieval of the aircraft’s black boxes, which include the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, had initially taken place within days of the incident.
The recovered data was accessed by a team led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and supported by experts from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Together, they aim to piece together the events leading up to the crash and determine the factors contributing to it.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy expressed her hope that the Indian government would promptly share the investigation’s findings with the public to enhance aviation safety and awareness. Investigators are particularly focused on the operational performance of the aircraft and its engines, with preliminary reports suggesting the emergency-power generator was active at the time of the crash.
Over the past weeks, there have been calls for improved safety protocols in light of several air disasters, including this incident. The aviation regulator in India has mandated extensive safety checks on all Boeing 787 aircraft within the country as part of this effort. These measures include reviewing key takeoff parameters and the functionality of flight control systems.
In the aftermath of this substantial tragedy, there are strong community calls for reform in aviation safety measures, reflecting a collective determination to foster a safer flying environment.
