The Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO) has made a groundbreaking decision by appointing Aileen Burness as its new Chair, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the organization in its 12-year history. This appointment arrives at a momentous time as the PFO gears up for 2026, which has been designated as the United Nations International Year of the Woman Farmer.
A respected figure in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region, Burness has cultivated a strong reputation over decades with her extensive background in agriculture, particularly in floriculture. Her leadership style is noted for its practicality, focus on results, and an unwavering work ethic.
Continuing a rich legacy of service in the agricultural sector, Burness follows in the footsteps of her late husband, Don Burness, who played a pivotal role in enhancing farmer organizations and advancing agricultural development across multiple Pacific nations.
Burness succeeds Minoru Nishi, who has been a constant presence on the PFO board since its founding. Although Nishi is stepping down from his chair position, he will continue to serve on the board, providing essential stability and support during this transition period.
This historic appointment not only underscores the growing recognition of women’s contributions to agriculture but also heralds a new chapter for the PFO as it moves forward with its mission to empower farmers in the Pacific region.
