The Government has initiated the distribution of non-food items to evacuation centres throughout the Western Division, with plans to extend assistance to families who are still residing in their homes following recent weather disruptions.

Currently, there are 27 active evacuation centres across the Western Division as authorities monitor the ongoing displacement of residents. Elimi Rokoduru, the Divisional Planning Officer West, confirmed that while some centres have closed, others remain occupied, with a total of 701 evacuees reported. Nadi is noted to have the highest number of active sites, with four centres in Ba, five in Lautoka, 11 in Nadi, and seven in Sigatoka.

In Sigatoka, the Malele area has been highlighted as one of the most significantly affected regions. Mr. Rokoduru emphasized that those residing in the designated evacuation centres will be prioritized for structured support. He expressed hope that individuals in need of assistance would register at the evacuation centres to streamline the process of capturing their numbers and addressing their needs.

While discussing the increase in the number of evacuees, Mr. Rokoduru pointed out that the condition of personal dwellings is a key reason many individuals remain in place rather than seeking formal assistance. He noted that fewer than five schools are currently being used as evacuation centres, with a goal to clear these facilities soon.

Officials are urging patience as they continue to work diligently to assist those in need, ensuring that all affected individuals receive the support necessary to recover from the recent disturbances.
