Manasa Katonivere, a dedicated Year 11 student at Nabua Secondary School, recently conveyed a powerful message to his classmates: hard work is irreplaceable. Earlier this year, Manasa encountered significant challenges during his enrollment process in Suva’s secondary education system. Coming from a low-income background and lacking support from his peers, he fought hard to carve out his niche.
To assist with his educational expenses, his parents invested in a brush cutter, which allowed him to earn an income by cutting grass in the neighborhood. Manasa’s determination shone through as he tirelessly balanced work with his studies. Highlighting the struggles his family faced, he stated, “Seeing my parents struggle from time to time, I knew I had to level up and become the best version of myself every day.”
Fortuitously, Manasa received support from Nirmal Singh Cheema, who played a pivotal role in his educational journey. The young student expressed immense gratitude for Mr. Cheema’s mentorship, reflecting on how it positively impacted his life.
Recently, at a prize-giving ceremony, Manasa was acknowledged for representing his school in the AFL Under-17 tournaments in Australia, marking a significant milestone in his life. Mr. Cheema emphasized the importance of nurturing potential in youth, stating, “I want to share that there are many young people like Manasa who need our support and encouragement. We must believe in our children.”
He further captured the essence of community involvement with the adage, “It takes a village to raise a child,” urging everyone to assist children striving for success despite financial barriers. Mr. Cheema also called on schools to embrace every student, highlighting the unique potential each one possesses.
This poignant story serves as a reminder of how resilience, community support, and unwavering dedication can pave the way for success. Manasa’s experiences are an inspiration for others, showcasing that with determination and the right support networks, obstacles can be transformed into opportunities for growth.
In summary, Manasa Katonivere’s journey underscores the significance of hard work, community support, and the belief in one’s potential, painting a hopeful picture for young students facing similar challenges.
