Bula FC has made waves by signing Ibraheem Afazal, marking the club’s 24th signing of the season. The 18-year-old player left a positive impression on head coach Stephane Auvray during recent training trials. Afazal joins Bula FC after a stint with Sydney FC, expressing great pride in this achievement for himself and his family.
“I’ve always dreamed of signing a professional contract, and it’s a dream come true for me and my parents. All thanks to God for making this possible,” Afazal stated, reflecting on how pivotal this moment is for him.
Raised in Sydney, Afazal embodies his Fijian heritage, with his father originating from Nadi and his mother from Labasa. His passion for football blossomed early in his life, inspired by watching his older brother play, while his parents consistently encouraged him to pursue the sport. Afazal’s journey began with Mounties Wanderers FC (U9–U13) before he moved on to APIA Leichhardt FC (U14–U18), where his promising talent shone on larger platforms.
He possesses experience on the international stage, having represented Fiji in U17 and U19 competitions, where he received accolades such as man of the match honors at OFC events. As he embarks on his professional journey with Bula FC, Afazal hopes to continue his impressive form in the upcoming OFC pro league.
In addition to Afazal, Bula FC has secured two other overseas talents: 20-year-old Auckland midfielder Fergus Gillion and 19-year-old goalkeeper Matthew Foord. Gillion, who has previously played with the Phoenix Reserves before entering the senior professional sphere in 2023, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Bula FC. “It’s an honor to represent the club, and I’m excited to work hard every day to contribute to the team’s success,” he noted.
Gillion has also made five appearances for New Zealand at the U19 level and played a crucial role during the Junior All Whites’ U20 World Cup campaign.
Foord, who has built a solid career through clubs like Waimak United and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves, had a stand-out season before joining Bula FC. He even earned the Golden Glove award and was named Man of the Match in the final of a significant tournament. Reflecting on his transition to Bula FC, Foord shared his enthusiasm: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to sign a professional contract with Bula FC. The group has been very welcoming, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”
With their new roster additions, Bula FC aims to build a competitive team as they head into the new season, capitalizing on their international experience and homegrown talents. This positive momentum can lead to promising outcomes for both the players and the club, as they strive for success on the field.
