ADB Appoints New President: What Lies Ahead for Asia’s Development?

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Masato Kanda as its new president, officially taking office late last month. Kanda, the 11th leader of the ADB, succeeds Masatsugu Asakawa, who stepped down on February 23, 2025. With approximately four decades of experience in international finance and development policy, Kanda is noted for his innovative leadership, particularly during periods of financial turbulence.

During his prior role as Japan’s vice-minister of finance for international affairs, Kanda played a pivotal part in developing innovative financial strategies that contributed to market stabilization. The ADB Board of Governors chair, Fabio Panetta, expressed confidence in Kanda’s ability to lead the organization, stating that his experience and perspective would be crucial in helping ADB enhance its contributions to developing member countries.

Kanda emphasized his commitment to promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth in Asia and the Pacific, indicating a focus on addressing pressing development challenges collaboratively. He acknowledged the vital role of ADB in fostering development across the region and expressed his determination to ensure that the bank remains a partner of choice for its member countries.

This leadership transition comes at a time when the ADB is evolving to meet the dynamic needs of its member countries, and Kanda’s appointment positions the institution effectively to address future opportunities and hurdles. The ADB aims to utilize innovative financial solutions and partnerships to support growth and improve lives, highlighting Kanda’s appointment as a key step in ensuring continued progress in the region’s development efforts.

It’s a hopeful time for the ADB as it takes on new challenges under Kanda’s leadership, with a strong emphasis on building upon its legacy and enhancing its strategic outlook for the future.
