Seventeen-year-old Trinity Vakacavu’s return to basketball this year showcases her remarkable determination and resilience. After nearly a year of recovery from an ACL injury, Vakacavu achieved a significant milestone by being selected for the national squad at the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Cup, held in Samoa earlier this month.
Notably, she was chosen as co-captain and played a pivotal leadership role, helping guide her team to a commendable fifth-place finish against some of Oceania’s most formidable junior programs.
Reflecting on her experience, Vakacavu expressed the depth of her emotions, stating, “The experience was extra special to me, since it was the first basketball game I had played after a whole year off, coming back from my ACL injury. I was completely overwhelmed by so many emotions, then they named me ‘co-captain.’”
This tournament represented her first competitive appearance since her injury, adding a deeply personal layer to her comeback. Currently, Vakacavu continues to hone her skills by playing club basketball in Australia with the McKinnon Cougars, where her journey inspires many young athletes facing similar challenges.
