Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara has officially returned the chiefly legacy of Lau to Lakeba as he was installed as Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau—a title once held by his father, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. The significant installation ceremony occurred on Thursday at the village green in Tubou, drawing hundreds of attendees and thousands more who participated via television and social media platforms.
Beginning with a church service at the Tubou Methodist Church, the event transitioned into a veiqaraqaravi vakavanua, a traditional installation rite performed by the Yavusa o Navutoka. This moment marked the first installation of its kind in Lakeba since 1969, which was also the year Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was ceremonially acknowledged as Sau ni Vanua.
Ratu Tevita’s installation included a two-part ceremony presided over by Niumaia Gucake, the chief herald, who meticulously led the proceedings. The first segment recognized Ratu Tevita’s role as Sau ni Vanua o Lau. This was accompanied by traditional rituals, such as the binding of masi armlets—symbols of his chiefly status— and the presence of cupbearers offering yaqona and water, reflecting the deep-rooted customs of Lauan leadership.
For the second part of the ceremony, chiefs from across the Lau archipelago participated in the yaqona ritual, drinking in order of rank, solidifying the significance of unity and cultural respect within the community. The event concluded with the crowning of the Turaga na Daulakeba, the chief’s gonedau, who received a sacred headdress, signifying his important duty.
Ratu Tevita expressed deep appreciation for the support from the Lau people and emphasized the need for collective efforts to uphold the community’s cultural identity. This moment not only rejuvenates the historical continuity and traditional authority that has been absent for more than two decades but also symbolizes a hopeful new chapter for the Lau community.
