Waqasaqa Votuwale is filled with pride after his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, achieved the prestigious title of dux at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. At just 18 years old, Maraia scored an impressive 405 out of 500 in her Year 13 annual examination, underscoring her hard work and dedication.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer hailing from Bouma Village in Taveuni, spoke about the sacrifices he and his wife made to ensure their children’s education. The family made the significant decision to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, to provide their children with better educational opportunities, leaving behind their previous rural lifestyle.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale shared, highlighting the struggle involved in prioritizing his children’s needs as the primary provider. Both parents faced challenges in completing their secondary education due to financial constraints, but they were determined to not let their circumstances impede their children’s future.
Maraia’s success was not unexpected; her family recognized her consistent commitment to her studies. She previously earned the dux award in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination, showcasing her academic excellence early on. With aspirations to become an accountant, Maraia thanked her parents for their sacrifices and expressed her commitment to making them proud.
“As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, and that is why I aimed for the dux award,” she said, reflecting her ambition and determination to achieve her goals.
This story exemplifies how dedication and sacrifice can lead to success, inspiring other families and students to strive for excellence despite challenges. It demonstrates the positive impact of prioritizing education, showing that with perseverance and support, remarkable achievements are possible.
