This year has become particularly special for Isimeli Tavo Labalaba as he celebrated his 42nd birthday yesterday. Mr. Labalaba described the day as “the best gift ever” due to the graduation of his daughter, Francis Grace Siganisucu Labalaba, who earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Banking and Management from Fiji National University at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
Adding to the festivities, his wife, Iliseva, 45, is set to graduate today with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Leadership and Management.
The achievements of both mother and daughter this year mean a great deal to the Labalaba family. Mr. Labalaba regards this collective success as the best birthday gift he could have received. “This is a milestone achievement for our family because we’ve always prayed and worked hard for this day. It is finally here, and this is just overwhelming,” stated Ms. Labalaba. She expressed her pride in her daughter, highlighting her determination to persevere despite challenges along the way.
Francis echoed her mother’s sentiments, crediting her success to the unwavering support from her family. “I can’t express how proud I am to be graduating with my mother,” she said, emphasizing her gratitude to God for their journey. Due to her mother’s job transfer to the Aspen Medical Lautoka Hospital, Francis changed campuses to ease her commute after previously having to travel daily from Navua to Nasinu.
While pursuing her studies, Francis has also been working in the Finance Department at Fiji Airports, while her mother serves as a midwife at Aspen Medical. As the family prepares for a celebratory weekend, Ms. Labalaba affirms that their academic journey is just the beginning and encourages others: “Success knows no age, so keep at it and study as much as you want.”
