Caines Jannif, a prominent name in the photography industry, recently celebrated a remarkable milestone, its 120th anniversary, with a gala dinner at Chili House on Brown Street in Suva. The event was a heartwarming gathering of current and former employees, along with their families, all of whom have nurtured deep connections over the decades.

The story of Caines Jannif began in 1904 when Fredrick Caines established his photographic studio after acquiring the Le Faivre Photographic Studio and rebranding it as Caine’s Studios. Under his visionary leadership, the studio expanded and thrived, laying the groundwork for future generations to build upon.

In 1912, Mr. Caines welcomed N.A. Khan as manager, who later introduced his relatives Hannif Akbar and Ben Jannif into the company, helping to infuse new ideas and energies. When Mr. Caines had to step back due to health issues in 1935, the partnership of Mrs. Caines, Hannif, and Ben took over, demonstrating resilience through various economic challenges.

Years later, Amina Jannif joined the team, leading to further innovations and helping Caines Jannif secure a stronghold in Fiji’s photography sector. Ikbal Jannif, son of Ben Jannif, continued this legacy, ensuring that the company adapted to industry changes, including the shift to digital photography.

During the anniversary dinner, Director Sofia Jannif reflected on the journey, recalling a tragic fire incident six years ago that tested the company’s spirit. The celebration was not only an acknowledgment of past struggles and triumphs but also a tribute to the employees who have contributed to the rich history of the company. Longstanding employee Kelsey Jannif reminisced about her early days and the transition from manual processes to digitalization, which, while efficient, could not replicate the nostalgic feel of traditional photography.

The sense of belonging and loyalty among employees was evident, with many viewing Caines Jannif as their second home. Employee Yangtesh Reddy emphasized the familial culture that the company cultivates, ensuring that employees feel valued and motivated.

Over the decades, Caines Jannif has played a vital role in capturing and preserving Fiji’s history, including significant moments like the country’s independence in 1970. The company’s ability to immortalize pivotal events underscores its dedication to documenting Fiji’s identity.

As Caines Jannif celebrates its storied past, it is also poised for a bright future, characterized by continued innovation and excellence. The legacy left by generations inspires and motivates the company to uphold and expand its mission of encapsulating the beauty and essence of Fiji.

This celebration not only honors a rich history but lays a foundation for generations to continue the journey with optimism and dedication.
