The Kiwa Initiative is allocating $4.2 million to Live & Learn Environmental Education Fiji to support climate resilience projects over the next three years. Subesh Prasad, the regional project manager of Live & Learn, announced this funding at the launch of Kiwa’s latest regional projects, which took place at the Novotel Hotel in Lami.
Expressing enthusiasm for the initiative, Mr. Prasad emphasized the importance of making a meaningful impact in vulnerable communities affected by climate change. Live & Learn, a charitable trust based in Fiji, collaborates with communities across Asia and the Pacific to promote ethical and sustainable practices.
The Kiwa Initiative is a collaborative effort funded by multiple organizations, including the European Union, Agence française de développement, Global Affairs Canada, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It focuses on nature-based solutions to enhance climate resilience in Pacific Island ecosystems and economies.
Live & Learn will implement two new projects, Kiwa Empower and Kiwa Restore, which will also extend to initiatives in Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands, pending approval. The project will target 20 communities in Vanua Levu, specifically in the provinces of Cakaudrove, Macuata, and Bua, focusing on improving water systems, reforestation efforts, and promoting climate-smart agriculture to enhance food security.
This $4.2 million funding is part of a larger €6.6 million ($F15.7 million) budget for various climate adaptation programs throughout the Pacific region, reflecting a commitment to strengthening resilience in the face of climate change.
In summary, this funding represents a significant investment in climate adaptation efforts in Fiji and the broader Pacific region, highlighting an increasing collaboration between local organizations and international partners aimed at building sustainable futures for vulnerable communities. Such initiatives can foster environmental awareness and enhance community resilience, paving the way for a healthier planet.
