Beyond the headline

A fresh southeasterly wind flow will dominate Fiji’s weather through the coming days, with a strong wind warning remaining in force for several island groups and some coastal areas. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds are expected generally, with stronger southeast gusts and rough seas developing in parts of the group from tomorrow.

A strong southeast wind warning applies to the land areas of Yasawa, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the coastal areas of Rakiraki and Udu Point. Wind speeds in these warned areas may reach up to 45 km/h from tomorrow, creating rough sea conditions. Mariners and those planning coastal activities in these areas should expect choppy waters and increasing swell.

Rain and cloud will be focused mainly over Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, where cloudy periods with some showers are expected. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Elsewhere, most districts should see generally fine weather with only isolated afternoon or evening showers.

Local highlights for tomorrow include cloudy periods with some showers and possible afternoon or evening thunderstorms for Navua, Suva and Nausori (min 24°C, max 31°C), and similar conditions for Natadradave and Korovou (min 24°C, max 31°C). Sigatoka and the Coral Coast are expected to be mainly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers, with temperatures around 24–31°C. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should also remain mainly fine with isolated showers possible (min 24°C, max 32°C). Tavua and Rakiraki will see fine conditions apart from isolated showers, but Rakiraki is one of the coastal areas where strong southeasterly winds are expected to develop. Yasawa and the Mamanuca group are forecast mainly fine (min 24°C, max 31°C). Labasa is expected to be mostly fine with isolated showers (min 24°C, max 33°C). Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Rotuma will see more cloud and showers; Rotuma is affected by a trough with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate easterly winds and moderate seas (min 25°C, max 31°C for tomorrow).

The outlook for Monday remains much the same: moderate to fresh southeasterly winds with rough seas in many areas, continuing cloud and showers across the eastern and northern island groups and afternoon or evening thunderstorms possible over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Residents in the warned areas should secure loose objects and exercise caution along exposed coasts; mariners should avoid unnecessary travel and follow local advisories.
