A southeasterly wind flow will dominate the islands today, bringing pockets of showers and isolated heavy falls to parts of the group and setting the stage for afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the larger islands. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds and moderate to rough seas are expected across waters.
Occasional showers with isolated heavy falls are forecast for Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra–Rakiraki, southern Bua, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata. Cloudy periods with some showers are expected for Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding isles. Meanwhile Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are likely to see afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls; localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The outlook for Friday remains much the same, with cloudy periods and showers lingering in the same districts and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls again expected over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Winds are forecast to stay moderate to fresh from the southeast and seas moderate to rough through the period.
Local conditions: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers and isolated heavy falls with afternoon or evening thunderstorms (today’s temperatures around 24–31°C, rising to about 24–32°C on Friday). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers, with thunderstorms and heavy falls possible (today around 22–34°C). Labasa will see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls easing later today (about 23–34°C). The Coral Coast around Sigatoka can expect generally fine weather aside from afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Rotuma is in an easterly wind flow today with cloudy periods and brief showers. Showers are expected to develop and become more frequent from later tomorrow as a trough of low pressure approaches; winds there are moderate easterlies and seas moderate (today about 25–31°C, with Friday forecasts of occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms around 25–30°C). Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas and coastal communities should remain aware of the potential for localised flash flooding and rougher sea conditions.
