Maintenance work is underway along Kings Road at Naria in Rakiraki as contractors carry out a rip-and-remake programme to repair damaged sections of the carriageway. The latest phase of works has seen crews seal approximately 237 metres of roadway, with further reinstatement and surface works continuing in the area.
The rip-and-remake method involves removing substandard pavement layers before rebuilding and resealing the road to restore structural integrity and surface quality. Local authorities say the works are intended to improve road condition, boost accessibility and ensure safer travel for residents and the many commuters who rely on this key coastal route each day. Motorists travelling through the work zone are being urged to remain vigilant, obey traffic signs and reduce speed while upgrades are underway.
Contractors completed the 237 metres of sealing as part of staged maintenance operations designed to limit disruption to traffic along Kings Road. While no firm completion date has been announced, workers have been maintaining a presence on site and continuing with patch repairs and sealing in adjoining sections. Drivers can expect intermittent lane restrictions and changed traffic patterns where crews are operating.
The Naria works form part of an ongoing programme of seal maintenance and reinstatement across the Western Division. Recent projects in Rakiraki include sealing at Malake Landing, where about 225 metres of roadway were completed late last year, while other upgrades such as reinstatement at Waisomo Crossing and resurfacing projects in Tavua and Lautoka have been reported across the region. Together, these activities reflect continued investment in routine maintenance to prolong pavement life and reduce the need for more extensive emergency repairs after weather or wear.
Local residents and daily commuters stand to benefit from the improved surfaces, which reduce vehicle wear, improve ride comfort and enhance safety—particularly in wet conditions when damaged seals and potholes can increase crash risk. The ongoing works also aim to stabilise sections of the road that have deteriorated under heavy traffic, helping to maintain reliable access for buses, commercial vehicles and emergency services.
Authorities reiterate that roadworks will continue in phases and request patience from road users. Drivers are advised to heed temporary signage, follow directions from traffic controllers, and allow extra travel time when passing through the Naria work zone as contractors complete the remaining rip-and-remake and sealing tasks.
