A significant operation is underway at the Dignified Crematorium in Nakasi, where authorities are preparing to destroy approximately $2 billion worth of methamphetamine. This substantial seizure, totaling 4.15 tonnes, was confiscated from a property in Legalega, Nadi, in January of last year.
In a proactive measure, a heavy police and military presence has been established in the area, ensuring security and facilitating a transparent destruction process. The operation follows a High Court order and aims to uphold the integrity of law enforcement efforts against drug trafficking in Fiji.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mesake Waqa confirmed that thorough consultations with multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ministry of Environment, and international law enforcement agencies from Australia and New Zealand, have been conducted to ensure adherence to best practices during the disposal of the drugs. The destruction method involves vaporizing the substances in a furnace, a widely accepted practice for safely eliminating hazardous drugs.
The presence of legal representatives for involved defendants during the destruction, under strict protocols, highlights the operation’s transparency. Following the event, comprehensive details about the destruction will be made publicly available, reinforcing the commitment to accountability in such significant law enforcement actions.
This operation not only signifies a critical step in Fiji’s ongoing combat against drug-related crime but also symbolizes a united front among various agencies dedicated to public safety. The collaboration between local and international law enforcement showcases a commitment to promoting community well-being and addressing the pervasive challenges posed by illicit substances.
The planned destruction serves as a hopeful indication that authorities are taking decisive action to eradicate harmful drugs from circulation, fostering a safer environment for citizens. With such initiatives, Fiji continues to reinforce its stance against drug trafficking, paving the way for a brighter future.
