The Ministry of Public Works has allocated nearly $2.5 million for the construction and improvement of roads, as stated by Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau. The revival of the Public Works Department (PWD) has been instrumental in expediting the development of rural infrastructure, enabling direct government involvement in infrastructure projects.
Minister Tuisawau highlighted that this initiative not only includes timely maintenance of roads but also extends to essential public facilities. The ministry has procured approximately $2.6 million worth of heavy machinery to support these engineering efforts.
Among the projects currently underway are upgrades to several significant roads, including the Naisogo Road, which links Davuilevu and Colo-i-Suva, the Naiserelagi to Nalawa Road in Ra, and the upgrades to various roads in the Western Division and Northern Division. With ongoing works, the ministry aims to improve connectivity across rural areas, addressing the needs of those who have long faced infrastructure challenges.
The re-establishment of the PWD comes after its closure by the previous government, signaling a renewed commitment to rebuilding workforce capacity within the government. This move is expected to bring about enhanced infrastructure development, promoting better access for communities while fostering economic growth.
A positive outlook accompanies these developments, as they signify a proactive approach to improving road conditions, ultimately leading to a better quality of life for residents across Fiji. The government’s emphasis on infrastructure improvement reflects a hopeful dedication to enhancing community connectivity and local economies.
