A 16-year-old boy tragically lost his life while swimming in the Narewa River in Nadi on Thursday morning, just days before his school was set to resume. Malakai Tubea, a Year 11 student at Ratu Navula College, was enjoying a day out with a church youth group when he was swept away by powerful currents around 10:30 AM.
Witness Philip Samo recounted the heartbreaking event, stating that Malakai attempted to cross the river after two friends had successfully made it to the other side. Unfortunately, he encountered difficulties in the deep, raging water during high tide. Samo noted that Malakai seemed to experience muscle cramps and began calling for help, but his cries were initially dismissed as a prank. Despite a relative’s brave effort to swim to him, they were unable to reach Malakai in time.
Local responders quickly launched a search for the teenager, and his body was found around 1:30 PM. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was subsequently transported to Nadi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
Malakai had been living in Qeleloa, Nadi, with his aunt following the passing of his father. This unfortunate event serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that natural waterways can pose, particularly during adverse conditions. The community mourns the loss of a promising young life, and Malakai’s memory will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
