14 March 2026: Fiji forecast warns of heavy afternoon thunderstorms over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu with widespread showers across the group

A moist easterly wind flow prevails across Fiji this morning (issued 5:30 am Saturday 14 March 2026), bringing cloudy periods and scattered showers to many eastern and island districts while Viti Levu and Vanua Levu face a higher risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms with heavy falls. Winds are generally moderate from the east and seas are moderate for most districts.

Cloudy periods with some showers are expected over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau group, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and surrounding islets. Elsewhere conditions will be mostly fine, but afternoon or evening showers are still possible. In particular, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu should prepare for thunderstorms later in the day that could produce heavy rainfall in short periods.

Local temperatures will remain warm. Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect lows around 25°C and highs near 32°C, while Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will see lows about 24–25°C with maxima around 32–33°C. Sigatoka and the Coral Coast are forecast fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms with heavy falls, with temperatures in the mid‑20s to low 30s. Labasa is likely to be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with a maximum near 33°C.

Maritime conditions are generally moderate seas with moderate easterly winds. Rotuma is an exception: a trough of low pressure is affecting the island, producing cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, together with moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Mariners and those planning to travel to or from Rotuma should take extra care.

The outlook for Sunday remains largely unchanged, with the same districts seeing cloudy periods and some showers and Viti Levu and Vanua Levu again likely to experience afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls. Given the potential for heavy downpours, residents in affected low‑lying or flood‑prone areas should be aware of the risk of localized flooding and brief hazardous conditions during intense thunderstorms.
