Zootropolis 2 has made history by becoming Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film, amassing an impressive $1.7 billion (£1.3 billion) at the global box office. Known as Zootopia 2 in some regions, this sequel has surpassed the former record holder Inside Out 2, which earned $1.69 billion since its 2024 release.
Now sitting as the ninth most successful film in global box office history, Zootropolis 2 ranks just behind major blockbusters such as Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Despite this remarkable achievement, the title for the highest-grossing animated movie overall still belongs to China’s Ne Zha 2, which garnered $2.2 billion (£1.65 billion) last year.
Released in November with an estimated budget of $150 million (£112 million), Zootropolis 2 is the follow-up to 2016’s hit Zootropolis. The movie features rabbit police officer Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, reuniting with con artist fox Nick Wilde, played by Jason Bateman, to track down a new mysterious reptilian character named Gary De’Snake, portrayed by Ke Huy Quan.
Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman attributed this significant milestone to the fans worldwide, stating, “This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible. We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers… Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”
The film had previously set the record for the biggest opening weekend for an animated movie upon its release, coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. Remarkably, it also became the fastest animated Hollywood film to reach the $1 billion mark globally.
While Zootropolis 2 celebrates its groundbreaking success, Ne Zha 2 still leads the animated box office, having generated most of its earnings in China.
Overall, the phenomenal response to Zootropolis 2 underscores the film’s universal appeal and the dedication of its creators, promising a bright future for animated storytelling in Hollywood and beyond.
