Local athletics coach Antonio Raboiliku anticipates a wave of records to be shattered during the upcoming zone competitions, particularly with the significant events that lie ahead for young athletes. The competitions, which serve as qualifiers for both the prestigious Coca-Cola Games and the national team for the Pacific Mini Games, are expected to enhance the competitive spirit among participants.
Raboiliku estimates that many athletes from Ratu Sukuna have already secured their spots for the Mini Games, particularly among female competitors in field events. He believes that this will generate an exciting atmosphere as they compete for records and attempt to solidify their positions on the final squad.
“The depth in talent displayed by athletes from Zone 1, especially in the long events, is noteworthy,” he stated, highlighting that schools like Jai Narayan and others have shown promising performances. The rivalry amongst major schools—such as Latter Day Saints, Dudley, and Nasinu High School—will also make for a thrilling competition, as they all aim for the top.
Raboiliku emphasized the importance of this competitive phase, predicting that even the title race might come down to the final event of the second day, indicating an exhilarating experience for spectators. His observations from both the Suva Zone 1 and Zone 2 competitions reveal a burgeoning athletic landscape in Fiji, paving the way for promising upcoming Fiji Finals.
The excitement surrounding these events marks a hopeful future for athletics, not only showcasing emerging talent but also reinforcing community involvement and fostering a spirit of sportsmanship. As schools rally together in support of their athletes, the stage is set for what could be a remarkable season in Fijian athletics.
