The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has urged a shift in mindset among the youth of Fiji following alarming reports of minors engaging in reckless activities, such as splattering water on passing vehicles. The Commissioner noted that this behavior has been a persistent issue, evidenced by multiple complaints.
Reflecting on a recent incident captured on video, he described a situation in which a police officer confronted a group of minors involved in this hazardous behavior. Despite ongoing efforts to address the issue, ACP Fong Chew expressed his frustration over the lack of adherence to warnings given over the years. He stated, “In every new year, we have been reiterating the same to the people of Fiji, but yet people still not adhering.”
The Commissioner emphasized the necessity for greater awareness of the law, asserting that ignorance is not an acceptable excuse for such actions. He stressed that the perspective of youth needs to change, particularly regarding their understanding and application of their rights. “Ignorance of law is not an excuse. The mindset should change,” he declared.
He voiced concerns about how young people often misuse their rights, despite having received consistent guidance. “I really have no idea why these youths continue to do this,” ACP Fong Chew admitted. He further added that while human rights have empowered today’s youth, there is a tendency for them to misapply these rights.
Reflecting on shifts in law enforcement practices, he noted, “Police is not like before… now people will be standing on the roadside with a camera to see what police is doing.” He acknowledged that while human rights have introduced significant changes, they have also inadvertently created challenges for law enforcement.
This call for a change in youth behavior serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible actions among younger generations. By fostering discussions on these issues and highlighting positive role models, there is hope that the youth of Fiji will gain a better understanding of the implications of their actions and make more informed choices moving forward.
