An English language teacher in Votualevu, Nadi, is spearheading an impactful clean-up initiative as part of a community service project at Colours English School. Rajvindar Dhesi, the project’s coordinator, is dedicated to inspiring students to apply their English skills to benefit the community while tackling the pressing issue of littering in the area.
This initiative was inspired by head teacher Tessa Santos Eastgate, who believes in fostering civic pride among students. Students have taken proactive steps by creating 12 trash bins from repurposed old drums and strategically placing them in high-traffic areas, such as around the Shop N Save Supermarket.
Initially, the school supported the project by providing garbage bags, but it has since expanded to include outreach to local businesses for sponsorships. This effort has garnered support, notably from Mr. Kavitesh Nand, director of My Looks Aluminum, who contributed supplies necessary for the clean-up.
Scheduled clean-up days take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, aiming not only for environmental maintenance but also for community support. Lawrence Kumar, vice president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the initiative, expressing optimism that it will inspire others in the community to take pride in their environment.
This effort aligns with other clean-up campaigns across Fiji, including those in Davuilevu and Nausori, which are similarly combating littering and waste management issues. These ongoing initiatives not only focus on clearing waste but also educate younger generations on environmental care and responsibility.
The collaborative nature of these clean-up efforts highlights a promising direction towards a cleaner and more sustainable Fiji, driven by the engagement of youth and community members in caring for their environment. Such initiatives can foster a sense of ownership and pride, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier planet.
