Youth-Led Clean-Up Initiative Sparks Civic Pride in Fiji

An English language teacher is taking the lead in a significant clean-up initiative in Votualevu, Nadi, as part of a community service project integrated into the curriculum at Colours English School. Rajvindar Dhesi, who coordinates the project, expressed pride in motivating students to use their English skills for community benefit, while also addressing the urgent issue of littering in the area.

This project originates from the vision of head teacher Tessa Santos Eastgate, who emphasized the importance of instilling civic pride among students. As part of their efforts, students have created 12 trash bins from repurposed old drums and placed them in key locations such as around the Shop N Save Supermarket.

Initially supported by the school providing garbage bags, the project evolved to include sponsorship letters to local businesses, leading to a donation from Mr. Kavitesh Nand, director of My Looks Aluminum, which helped fund necessary supplies. The program encourages residents to use the bins correctly and emphasizes the need for proper trash disposal, particularly on days when garbage collection occurs.

These clean-up efforts, organized every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, focus primarily on environmental upkeep and community assistance. Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president Lawrence Kumar praised the initiative, expressing hope that it will motivate others in the community to take similar pride in their surroundings.

Similar clean-up campaigns across Fiji, such as those in Davuilevu and Nausori, show a broader trend of community action against littering and waste mismanagement. These initiatives not only aim to clear waste but also serve to educate younger generations about environmental responsibility and care for their communities.

The ongoing collaborative spirit in these efforts showcases a hopeful trajectory towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Fiji, driven by the active participation of youth and community members in environmental stewardship.
