Young Fijians are being urged to embrace entrepreneurship as a means to enhance the economy and rejuvenate city centers. Jitesh Patel, the President of the Suva Retailers Association, emphasizes that businesses initiated by youth not only introduce innovative concepts but also provide support to established retailers.

Patel notes that these new ventures promote local commerce by keeping money within the community and offering attractive products and services that draw customers back to urban areas. In the face of competition from online marketplaces, young entrepreneurs are proving their mettle by providing competitive pricing and inventive solutions.

“We do encourage young people to come into the business field with innovative ideas. It is like a cycle. Even new businesses open, they do buy things from other retailers and wholesalers as well,” remarks Patel. He underscores the importance of fostering youth-led businesses for sustainable long-term development.

Investment Fiji’s Chief Executive, Kamal Chetty, adds that the agency is actively exploring avenues to elevate Fijian businesses. “Our focus is to see if we can grow Fijian businesses, but also to find them the right partners, and then find investments or investors that match our vision of our country, our national plan, and national aspirations,” he stated.

Through the support of young entrepreneurs, both the Suva Retailers Association and Investment Fiji hope to bolster the economy, revitalize city life, and create opportunities for sustainable community growth across Fiji. This initiative signifies a positive shift toward encouraging innovation and collaboration among the youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
