The Recycling on the Go (ROG) Ambassadors Leadership Forum took place earlier this month at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, highlighting efforts to instill sustainable behaviors among the youth in Fiji. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro underscored the significance of the event, emphasizing a shared objective to cultivate a lasting culture of sustainability for future generations.
This year’s forum featured five ROG ambassadors from various schools, including Jai Narayan College, Jasper Williams High School, Nadi Sangam Primary School, and Queen Victoria School. These young representatives shared their insights on waste management, discussed the hurdles they encountered, and presented innovative solutions. Additional contributions came from observers at Holy Cross College in Taveuni, further enriching the dialogue.
Minister Radrodro stressed the importance of empowering these young leaders, stating, “The next generation of change makers will help lead the fight against waste, pollution, and climate change in our schools and communities.” He also highlighted the crucial role of tackling waste as a significant contributor to environmental degradation, calling for immediate actions to address this pressing issue.
Organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with the Tanoa Hotel Group, Swire Shipping, and Tourism Fiji, the forum exemplified a united front towards sustainability. Amitesh Deo, founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, remarked that the ROG initiative extends beyond mere recycling; it empowers students to advocate for both social and environmental justice.
Deo pointed out that the forum was a vital space for students to engage in advocacy and accountability, encouraging discussions that resonate beyond their schools and into the broader community. Through the ROG ambassadors program, students are embracing the importance of responsible waste management and inspiring their peers and families to adopt similar environmentally-friendly habits.
This event marks a significant step forward in Fiji’s commitment to environmental sustainability, fostering a generation equipped to tackle ecological challenges actively. The success of initiatives like the ROG program heralds a promising future, as motivated young advocates take the lead in promoting better waste management practices within their communities.
