Shazreen Zaena Bibi, a dedicated nurse at just 24 years old, is passionately committed to being a catalyst for positive change in her community. Recently honored with the Youth of the Year award during the inaugural Nakasi Youth Club awards ceremony in Nadi, Ms. Bibi’s efforts reflect her belief in the potential of youth as crucial drivers of societal progress.
Hailing from Cakaudrove, she actively participates in her local youth club, engaging in significant climate action initiatives. “I joined the club and have taken part in various important climate change projects,” she stated, highlighting her involvement in projects such as mangrove planting and recent cleanup campaigns at the Nadi health center. Her message is clear: it is essential to support those in need while also addressing urgent environmental challenges.
Ms. Bibi emphasizes the importance of education and empowerment for young people, advocating for the development of mental and emotional resilience. “Let’s punch above our weight in whatever small things we do to inspire those around us,” she urged, focusing on the significance of collective action.
The event was officiated by former Nadi Town Council special administrator Lawrence Kumar, who shed light on the pressing issues faced by society, such as drug and substance abuse, youth vandalism, and declining school performance rates. He called for a new generation of leaders to address these challenges, emphasizing the necessity of nurturing capable young minds to secure a brighter future for Fiji.
Kumar pointed out that discussions regarding national development initiatives and funding have often resulted in stagnation. However, he asserted that committed youth clubs could play a pivotal role in preparing future generations, ensuring they are equipped to face challenges head-on.
This narrative of proactive engagement and responsibility among the youth paints a hopeful picture of a community working together to foster a brighter, more sustainable future. The actions taken by individuals like Ms. Bibi serve as inspiration, demonstrating that even small efforts can lead to significant changes in society.
