President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu of Fiji and First Lady Emily Lalabalavu were officially invested as Chief Scout and Patron of the Fiji Girl Guides Association, respectively, in a ceremony at State House this week. This occasion emphasized their commitment to youth development, gathering together leaders from both the Fiji Scouts Association and the Fiji Girl Guides Association.

During his address, President Lalabalavu highlighted pressing issues affecting young people today, such as the increase in illicit drug use and related HIV cases. He encouraged the youth, comprising Scouts, Rangers, Guides, and Brownies, to establish moral fortitude and spiritual discipline in resisting negative influences. “As a former Sea Scout, I can speak to the life skills and values the movement imparts—leadership, teamwork, compassion, and service,” he noted, affirming the impact that these organizations have on developing responsible citizens.

First Lady Emily Lalabalavu used her platform to advocate for empowering girls and young women, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and addressing barriers like discrimination and violence, particularly for girls with disabilities. With the current Girl Guide membership at 10,850, she expressed optimism for growth by the year’s end, stating, “The Fiji Girl Guides Association continues to nurture discipline, confidence, and resilience in young girls. We want them to face life’s challenges with strength and purpose.”

The celebration aligns with a broader movement as both the Scouts and Girl Guides continue to be among the largest global youth networks, fostering values of service, leadership, and respect. In Fiji, scouting has a rich 110-year history, engaging over 13,000 members nationwide.

The Fiji Scouts Association also held its Annual General Meeting after the investiture, during which new office bearers for the 2025-2026 terms were elected.

The event reflects a collective effort to promote youth empowerment and wellbeing in Fiji. The dedication shown by leaders, volunteers, and community members showcases a positive commitment towards creating a nurturing environment for the youth of the nation. This moment could signify an important step forward in addressing societal challenges while reinforcing the values that help shape the leaders of tomorrow.
