Cricket Fiji has enlisted Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey for a short-term training camp aimed at preparing the national Under-19 team for the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers, set to take place in Japan this April. This initiative is an integral part of Cricket Fiji’s strategy to enhance both the skills of young cricketers and the country’s standing in international cricket.
Commencing on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva, the training camp will run until January 25 and incorporates not only skill development sessions but also a holistic approach that involves local coaches. Dubey, who is in his third year working with Cricket Fiji, emphasized the significance of this method, stating, “It’s essential to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.” He is determined to see the players develop their core skills to compete at a professional level on the international stage.
Dubey expressed gratitude for the opportunity to mentor the young athletes, noting their admirable character and enthusiasm for learning. “The energy and the learning are at the highest level when one works with good, humble, and simple people,” he remarked, highlighting how such an environment enhances the training experience.
Moreover, this training camp is also open to female players participating in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition, further promoting inclusivity within the sport and fostering a supportive environment for all young cricketers in Fiji.
Overall, this initiative underscores the commitment of Cricket Fiji to cultivate talent and enhance the capabilities of the sport within the country. With a strong focus on skill development and inclusiveness, this training endeavor is poised to nurture a new generation of cricketers, bringing hope for a brighter future for cricket in Fiji on the international stage.
