Youth and Sports Ministry Initiates Sports Grounds Upgrade

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has requested quotations from contractors for the refurbishment of various sports grounds nationwide.

Minister Jese Saukuru indicated that an estimated $50,000 is earmarked for the upgrade of these identified sports grounds.

These grounds are currently used by rugby teams for hosting games during major provincial competitions.

“We are already working on this initiative,” Saukuru said. “Our goal is to obtain quotations from contractors willing to collaborate with us.”

“The improvements will be made to existing facilities to enhance their conditions, ensuring proper drainage and elevation since many grounds suffer from poor conditions due to water, rain, and inadequate drainage. We also aim to ensure appropriate seating for spectators,” he explained.

This project is part of the allocation in the 2024-2025 budget.

“We want these grounds to be in better shape, particularly the school grounds used for provincial games. Many provincial rugby teams lack permanent home grounds, such as Naitasiri, Bua, Macuata, Kadavu, and Lau,” he added.

Saukuru acknowledged that they might not be able to renovate all grounds this year but assured continued efforts in subsequent years.
