Youth Activism Takes Center Stage at WIN 2025 Convention

At the recent Women Invigorating the Nation 2025 Convention (WIN 2025) held in Suva, climate change activist AnnMary Vikatoria Raduva emphasized the importance of youth activism and the urgent need for young people to voice their concerns about environmental issues. Speaking to an audience filled with supporters, she reflected on her journey from being a 15-year-old activist often dismissed by adults, to becoming a powerful advocate demanding recognition and action.

Raduva stated, “In our small corner in the Pacific, we may not have the respect we deserve as young activists, but we mobilized my generation to protect our Earth because we have lost hope in our adults.” Her call to action illustrates a broader trend where youth are increasingly standing up for their beliefs and demanding a seat at the table, not just in Fiji but globally.

She expressed frustration with the adults who often disregard younger voices, noting that youth should not be underestimated as historical movements show that they have historically been catalysts for significant change. “When I entered the public sphere, I was mentally, emotionally, and spiritually prepared to be criticized,” she said, recognizing the challenge of advocating for change in a world often skeptical of youthful perspectives.

Raduva’s statements echo the sentiments of other young leaders, such as Shazreen Zaena Bibi, who is known for her work in local climate initiatives and was recently honored with the Youth of the Year award. Bibi’s advocacy highlights how young people are taking proactive roles in addressing climate change in their communities, embodying Raduva’s message of empowerment and activism.

The WIN 2025 convention focused on empowering women and youth, which aligns with the broader goals of fostering inclusivity and representation in leadership and decision-making processes. As highlighted by Fiji’s Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, the convention served as a vital platform for advocating gender equality and the inclusion of youth voices in discussions that affect their futures.

Raduva’s presence and passionate discourse at the convention signify a hopeful outlook for the future, as more young people rally together to champion causes that impact their lives and the planet. Her message affirms that change is possible when youth are driven, supported, and heard in their communities, promoting a vision for a sustainable and equitable world.
