Sergeant Zaira Begg, an accomplished former Miss Fiji from Ba, is making headlines as the youngest member of the latest Fiji contingent deployed to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). With her maternal roots in the Nukutubu village in Rewa, Sergeant Begg is set to represent her country on an international platform.

The contingent, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Aseri Nakibo, recently began their mission, comprising 14 members, of which six are women. This deployment highlights the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to increasing the participation of women in global peacekeeping efforts.

At just 28 years old and currently serving in the Community Policing Department at the Fiji Police Academy, Sergeant Begg reflected on her journey, stating that her selection for this mission solidifies her belief in divine guidance. “A decade ago, while volunteering with the Fiji Red Cross Society, I aspired to serve with the ICRC in war-torn regions. Today, I embark on a remarkable journey with the Fiji Police Force as part of the United Nations Mission in Sudan. All glory and praise belong to God,” she shared.

Expressing her gratitude, she noted, “As the youngest member of this contingent, I am motivated and inspired by the wealth of experience surrounding me, with seasoned officers ready to guide and mentor me.” She extended appreciation to God, the Fiji Police Force for their support in empowering young women, and her family in Ba for their unwavering love.

This news is a testament to the growing recognition of women in leadership roles within peacekeeping missions and reflects a positive shift in the global approach to including diverse perspectives in conflict resolution and community building. With Sergeant Begg at the forefront, there is hope that her journey will inspire other young women to pursue careers in law enforcement and international service.

By highlighting her career path, the Fiji Police Force is showcasing the opportunities available for young women and the importance of perseverance and support from family and community.
