Thomas Osbourne has been named Volunteer of the Year for the Nalawa branch of the Fiji Red Cross Society, standing out for his commitment to service within his community. At just 23 years old, Thomas has become a trusted figure in his village of Mau, situated in the Veivatuloa hills of Namosi, where he has spent the past 11 months volunteering.

Thomas’s dedication to helping others comes from a deep-rooted belief instilled in him from a young age. He emphasizes the importance of giving his time, energy, and skills without expecting anything in return. “Helping people in need and serving my community— it’s what drives me,” he shared, highlighting the significance of supporting others during their toughest challenges.

His educational journey took place at Vashist Muni College, where he developed interests in Home Economics and computer sciences which initially fueled his aspiration to become a teacher—a role he views as another form of service. However, his path shifted toward volunteering upon discovering the impactful work of the Red Cross.

Throughout his time with the organization, he has engaged in disaster preparedness training, first-aid workshops, and community outreach initiatives. These experiences have helped him grow, enhancing his understanding of selfless service.

Looking ahead, Thomas envisions a future where he continues to contribute to the Red Cross while pursuing his teaching ambitions, believing both endeavors align perfectly. When advising others interested in volunteering, Thomas encourages, “Just start, even the smallest effort can mean the world to someone else. And you’ll gain so much in return, knowledge, friendships, and a sense of purpose.”

This story serves as an inspiration for young individuals considering community service, underscoring that meaningful change often begins with personal dedication and a willingness to help others. Thomas’s journey exemplifies how volunteering can positively impact both the community and the volunteer, showcasing the profound effects of selfless acts in everyday life.
