The inaugural leg of the Fiji Sports Council Under 20 Sevens Rugby tournaments kicked off at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, featuring a competitive gathering of 16 men’s and six women’s teams participating in the one-day event.
Tiko Matawalu, the tournament director, emphasized that this event serves as a vital platform for Under 20 players, who often find themselves overshadowed in larger competitions. He expressed the importance of allowing these young athletes to shine in their own right. “They deserve their space; they’ve been previously overshadowed in tournaments that focus on open grades,” said Matawalu.
Matawalu expressed gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council for organizing this tournament, identifying it as a unique opportunity for young male and female rugby players to compete on their own terms. “They are here to showcase their skills. The support from Fiji Rugby for this initiative illustrates that we are moving in the right direction,” he noted.
Moreover, the tournament has garnered significant community support, with parents and guardians playing a crucial role in encouraging and uplifting the players. Matawalu pointed out that this support contributes greatly to the athletes’ comfort and confidence during the matches, ensuring they feel safe while participating.
This tournament is not just a competition; it represents a step forward in providing young ruggers with the recognition and opportunity they deserve. With the encouragement of parents and the support of the rugby community, these under-20 athletes are set to inspire and elevate the standard of the sport in Fiji.
Overall, this event highlights the potential of young athletes and reinforces the importance of community support in nurturing talent. It opens doors for future competitions dedicated to youth and helps build a solid foundation for the next generation of rugby players.
