Faizan Zaki, a talented 13-year-old from the Dallas area, emerged victorious in the prestigious 97th Scripps National Spelling Bee held recently, winning the competition by accurately spelling the French-derived word “eclaircissement,” which means enlightenment. In a gripping final round, Zaki triumphed over 14-year-old Sarvadnya Kadam from Visalia, California, who placed second after mistakenly spelling “Uaupes,” a tributary in South America.
This year marked a remarkable turn for Zaki, who was the runner-up last year. In the 20th round, he successfully spelled “Chaldee,” a dialect associated with Biblical Aramaic. However, according to the rules of the contest, he needed to secure one more word in a solo round to clinch the title. He did just that in round 21, astonishing the audience by delivering his answer confidently without taking the standard pause to consult the judges regarding the word’s nuances.
The audience erupted in celebration as Zaki was presented with his championship title amid a shower of confetti, surrounded by his proud family. For his achievement, Zaki will receive a substantial prize of $50,000.
