Lawerence Fatiaki has emerged as the standout champion at this year’s Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championship, clinching the prestigious blue ribbon gold medal. The talented Year 8 student from Nehru Memorial Primary School excelled in the under-14 100m final, securing gold for his team, Suva Rua, at the HFC Bank Stadium last week.

In addition to his triumph in the 100m, Fatiaki also claimed gold in the 200m final, showcasing his remarkable sprinting abilities. “I feel fantastic for winning the blue ribbon, and I thank the Lord for giving me the strength to run the race and win,” he expressed after his victory. His victory was the culmination of months of dedicated training, as Fatiaki had been preparing for this event since last year, often practicing even during school breaks to achieve his goal.

His mother, Heilala Anau, noted her son’s unwavering determination. “It’s his commitment and drive that has allowed him to win, and he really deserves it,” she said proudly. In addition to the individual races, Fatiaki also participated in the 4x100m relay, further demonstrating his athletic versatility.

The two-day championship concluded with a speech from Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru, who emphasized the importance of the young athletes as the foundation of Fiji’s sporting future. “To all athletes, whether you walked away with a medal or a personal best, you’ve made your schools, families, and Fiji proud,” he stated. He reminded participants that this event marks the beginning of their sporting journeys, and recognized the significant role sports play in character building and community inspiration.

In terms of overall performance, Suva One topped the boys’ division with a total of 12 gold medals, followed by Nadi with six golds, and Suva Rua claiming third place with five gold medals. In the girls’ division, Nadi dominated with 18 golds, while Cakaudrove and Macuata South placed second and third, respectively.

This event not only celebrates young talent but also fosters a sense of community pride and optimism for the future of athletics in Fiji. The commitment of these young athletes promises to inspire further sporting excellence in the country.
