Gurneet Kaur, the head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has achieved remarkable success by becoming the top student, or dux, of Year Eight. Her outstanding performance in both the annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE) has set her apart at the school located in Labasa. Hailing from Kawakawa Settlement as the youngest of three siblings, Gurneet scored an impressive 526 marks out of 600 in the FEYE.

Determined to fulfill her dream of becoming the first doctor in her family, the 13-year-old dedicated herself to extensive study, often working late into the night and throughout weekends. “I have always come first in my class since Year One,” Gurneet stated, showcasing her commitment and perseverance.

Gurneet’s aspirations to pursue medicine are fueled by her experience observing the difficulties faced by people in her community, who often have to travel long distances to access medical care at the Labasa Hospital or Nasea Health Centre. Her desire is to provide immediate medical services and address health issues prevalent in her area, such as diabetes.

Expressing gratitude, Gurneet acknowledged the support of her parents and teachers in helping her achieve her academic goals. She takes pride in her rural background, aiming to inspire others by demonstrating that educational excellence is attainable regardless of one’s school environment.

This inspiring story highlights not only Gurneet’s individual accomplishments but also the potential for youth in rural communities to become agents of change through education and dedication. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging other students to strive for their dreams and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
