Young Scholar Aims to Change Lives: Meet Gurneet Kaur, Future Doctor

Gurneet Kaur, the head girl at Waiqele Primary School, has made her family proud by achieving the highest academic honors as the dux of Year Eight. Celebrated for her outstanding performance, she scored an impressive 526 out of 600 in the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE) at her school in Labasa.

Hailing from Kawakawa Settlement and the youngest of three siblings, Gurneet has dedicated countless hours to her studies. “I studied day and night, including weekends, because my goal is to become the first doctor in my family,” she shared. Her academic dedication has allowed her to consistently rank first in her class since Year One.

With an eldest sister who is a teacher and a brother studying engineering, Gurneet has been inspired by her family’s academic achievements. Witnessing the struggles of individuals in her community who have to travel long distances for medical care has fueled her ambition to become a doctor. “I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care and reducing the fear of serious health issues,” she expressed.

Gurneet credits her success to the support of her parents and teachers, who have played a vital role in her educational journey. She takes pride in her rural origins and aims to inspire others, demonstrating that excellence in education is possible regardless of the school one attends.
