The inaugural leg of the Fiji Sports Council’s under-20 sevens rugby tournament kicked off at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, featuring 16 men’s teams and six women’s teams in a one-day showcase.

Tournament director Tiko Matawalu emphasized the significance of this event as a dedicated platform for under-20 players, allowing them to shine independently. He noted that these young athletes often found themselves overshadowed in larger competitions and deserved the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a more focused environment.

Matawalu expressed gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council for organizing the tournament, which he believes provides both male and female players a chance to compete and display their talents. He highlighted the support from Fiji Rugby for this initiative, noting that the tournament marks a positive step forward for youth rugby in the region.

He also acknowledged the vital role that parents and guardians play in supporting the athletes. Their presence at the event contributes to a safe and encouraging environment, allowing the competitors to feel comfortable and supported as they engage in the sport they love.

This tournament not only represents a critical moment for young athletes in Fiji but also cultivates a culture of nurturing future talent in rugby. The positive response from both players and spectators underscores the importance of providing dedicated opportunities for youth sports, potentially paving the way for the next generation of rugby stars.

In summary, the event highlights the commitment to youth development in sports, creating a brighter future for aspiring athletes in Fiji’s rugby landscape.
