A team of secondary school players from Naboutini has achieved a significant victory by defeating the home team Bainivualiku Vatulele with a score of 24-7 in the Shield Final of the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s 2024 tournament held yesterday. The young athletes hailing from Naboutini Village in Serua entered the two-day event not only to compete but also to gain valuable experience while steering themselves away from the threats of illicit drugs.
Team coach Setefano Naitonicagi expressed his joy after the match, stating the importance of their win. “Firstly, we would like to thank God for the win today and for protecting us and ensuring we sustained no injuries or lost a life even,” Naitonicagi said. He underlined that the team, made up of students predominantly in years 11, 12, and 13, was formed with the specific aim of guiding them away from drugs.
Leading up to the tournament, the players participated in a rigorous preparation that included camping at the Naboutini Village Hall and training sessions at the scenic Sigatoka Sand Dunes. Naitonicagi emphasized that winning the Shield is just a stepping stone for the group. “This is just the beginning. I’ve told the players that this is not the end, but the beginning and we will take them to other sevens tournaments as well since it’s now the school holidays,” he remarked.
In closing, the coach expressed gratitude to the villagers and supporters for their unwavering thoughts, prayers, and support throughout their preparation, ultimately contributing to this impressive victory.
This triumph symbolizes a positive direction for the players, fostering unity and resilience while steering them toward a brighter future through sports. It serves as an inspiration not only for the team but also for the community, highlighting the power of teamwork and dedication.
In summary, the Naboutini rugby sevens team has not only claimed victory but also stood as a testament to the impact of sports on youth development. With plans for further participation in tournaments, their journey is just beginning, encouraging other youths to engage in positive activities.
