While many students are engaging in holiday jobs and enjoying festive activities, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau stands out by committing to his passion for rugby. The Sila Central High School student has joined his district team at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s, which kicked off yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. This marks Tagicakibau’s debut with the Nakelo Babas side from Naimalavau, Nakelo, Tailevu.

Having played rugby from a young age, Tagicakibau expresses gratitude for the opportunity to further his skills in the sport. “I always pray for the chance to progress in rugby and build a career around it,” he shared. His journey into this team was sparked by encouragement from a fellow youth from his village.

The aspiring rugby player shared insights into his training approach, emphasizing the importance of treating each match with utmost seriousness as advised by their coach. With Fijian Drua and Flying Fijian flanker Kitione Salawa as his idol, Tagicakibau aims to emulate his playing style, particularly as he plays flanker at the U16 level while also engaging in rugby league as a center for his school team.

Tagicakibau values the support from his family, which has fueled his ambition, despite facing criticism along the way. He remains focused on honing his skills, often seeking guidance from older players to enhance his game further. Should his rugby ambitions not pan out, he has a backup plan to consider a career in the British Army.

Overall, Tagicakibau’s dedication and proactive attitude towards his rugby career not only inspire his peers but also highlight the importance of pursuing one’s passion even amidst challenges. His determination to succeed in sports while planning for alternatives demonstrates a well-rounded approach to youth aspirations, serving as an encouraging message to young athletes everywhere.
