Young Rugby Stars Triumph Over Adversity in Shield Final

A group of secondary school students from the Naboutini rugby sevens team triumphed over local favorites Bainivualiku Vatulele, securing a 24-7 victory in the Shield Final at the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s tournament yesterday. The team, hailing from Naboutini Village in Serua, participated in this two-day event not only to gain valuable experience but also to steer its young players away from the dangers of drug use.

Coach Setefano Naitonicagi expressed his joy after the match, emphasizing gratitude to God for their safe victory and the absence of injuries. He explained that the team consists mainly of players from years 11 to 13, and that their formation was a proactive choice to distract them from negative influences, particularly illicit drugs.

In preparation for the tournament, the team engaged in training sessions at the picturesque Sigatoka Sand Dunes and shared a camping experience at the Naboutini Village Hall. Naitonicagi remarked that winning the Shield is just the beginning of their journey, inspiring them to strive for greater achievements in future tournaments, especially with school holidays on the horizon.

He also expressed appreciation for the support and encouragement from villagers and fans, which undoubtedly motivated the team throughout their preparation and led to their success in the tournament.
