Eroni Sarasau has no regrets about prioritizing his rugby career over education. The 19-year-old tight head prop, who hails from Lomati in Nabukelevu, Kadavu, recently represented his country in the national Under-20 squad and is focused on making a mark in 2025.

Sarasau, who is also connected to Rotuma through his maternal links, had planned to enroll in university but decided to forgo those plans in favor of participating in rugby tours this year. “It’s a tough decision to make because juggling both education and rugby is a bit tight, so I chose rugby,” he explained.

He has been part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for the past three years and currently plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team. Looking ahead to 2025, Sarasau is determined to contribute to his team’s success and create history in the sport. His aspirations include following in his uncle Etonia Waqa’s footsteps by securing a professional rugby contract.

Sarasau emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals in his position, stating, “Individually you have to know all your stunts and techniques if you want to dominate.” He admires the playing style of Mesake Doge, noting how distinct his skills are on the field.

Having transitioned from high school to provincial rugby, Sarasau acknowledges the challenges that come with advancing to the national level, where he feels a “big shoe to fill.” He started playing for Naitasiri at the age of 16, aiming to join the senior team next year when he turns 20.

The support of his family, particularly his parents and grandparents in Kadavu, has been integral to his journey. “They’ve been there with me from when I started playing when I was eight years old,” he said, recounting how living with his grandparents helped him adapt to village life. Sarasau completed his primary education in Kadavu before moving to Ratu Kadavulevu School in Year 9.

This journey showcases the dedication and sacrifices young athletes like Eroni Sarasau make in pursuit of their sports dreams. His commitment serves as inspiration for other aspiring players, demonstrating that with focus and support, dreams in sports can become realities.

Summary: Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old rugby player from Kadavu, prioritizes his sports career over education, aiming to make an impact with the national Under-20 squad and aspiring for a professional contract. With strong family support and determination, he seeks to excel in rugby, showcasing the dedication required in pursuit of athletic dreams.
