At just 20 years old, Phillip Baselala has demonstrated remarkable resilience as he carves out his place in the world of professional rugby. The scrumhalf for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua reflects on a challenging 2024, a year defined by personal growth and unyielding dedication to the sport.
Baselala faced one of his most significant challenges this year when he underwent surgery, forcing him to take an eight-month break from the game. “It was a challenging time for me,” he admitted. “Coming out of surgery and not being able to play was tough, but I worked hard to get back on the field.”
His return is not only a testament to his physical recovery but also highlights his mental strength and passion for rugby. Making a name for himself as the youngest player to successfully transition from the Fiji Secondary Schools Deans rugby competition to the Fijian Drua squad, he made his Super Rugby Pacific debut against the Melbourne Rebels in Suva and has since appeared in four matches in the Shop n Save Super Rugby competition. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Baselala aims to increase his playing time. “There’s a lot of competition from my brothers in the squad,” he said. “But I’ll have to try my best and put in the work to make it happen.”
The upcoming Super Rugby season is set to be even more competitive with a new format. Baselala acknowledges the challenge but is optimistic about the team’s preparations. “Pre-season has been tough, but all the players are fit and ready. It’s going to be a tough competition, but the boys are working hard,” he noted.
Hailing from Solotavui, Nakasaleka in Kadavu, Baselala’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across Fiji, showcasing the power of perseverance, hard work, and dedication.
This story is a powerful reminder that setbacks can lead to growth, and that determination can help overcome even the toughest challenges. Young athletes can take heart from Baselala’s example, knowing that resilience can pave the way for success in their own journeys.
