Setareki Turagacoke, the youngest player in the Flying Fijians rugby team, has recently faced a heartbreaking loss with the passing of his mother, Vani Ranavue, who died last Saturday after a brief illness. The 19-year-old expressed deep sorrow for losing his biggest supporter, who had always encouraged his rugby pursuits.
Turagacoke, who made an impressive debut for the Flying Fijians in a Test match against Spain on November 17, reflected on the joy his mother felt when she learned of his achievement. “She cried and told me that I have finally achieved my dreams,” he shared, revealing that they carried a close bond through rugby.
Receiving news of her passing while in France was devastating for him. He recalled how his mother would often offer pre-game advice, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game, having faith, and trusting himself. The young athlete lamented her absence, noting, “I will hear that no more.”
Originally from Naselai village in Tailevu, Ranavue decided to keep her illness hidden from her children. Turagacoke expressed concern for his younger sisters, who were raised by their grandmother after his parents separated. He wishes he could have thanked his mother for her unwavering support throughout their lives.
Turagacoke plans to return to Fiji to attend his mother’s funeral next Saturday. In his message to the youth, he encouraged them to cherish their time with their families, as life is unpredictable. “We don’t know when we’ll leave this world but only God,” he remarked, urging them to appreciate their parents’ love and support.
Despite this tragic event, Turagacoke’s rugby career continues to flourish. He played a significant role in the Flying Fijians’ victory over Spain, scoring a try and earning a position in the match against Ireland. He has also participated in France’s Top 14 and Champions Cup competitions, showcasing his talent on a prestigious stage.
