Ilaitia Tagicakibau, a 16-year-old student from Sila Central High School, has chosen to spend his holiday season participating in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, rather than engaging in typical festive activities or holiday jobs.

This season marks Tagicakibau’s debut with the Nakelo Babas team, and his passion for rugby has been evident since he was a child. “I always pray with the intention that God gives me an opportunity so that I can progress in this sport and pursue a career out of rugby,” he shared. Encouraged by a fellow village youth, he began training with the team and quickly became involved in tournaments.

Tagicakibau’s coach emphasizes the importance of treating each match as if it were the final game. He looks up to Fijian rugby player Kitione Salawa, admiring his skill on the field. Tagicakibau plays as a flanker for his school’s under-16 team and also participates in rugby league in the center position.

Grateful for the support of his family, he remains dedicated to his rugby aspirations despite facing criticism. He frequently seeks guidance from experienced players to enhance his skills, with the hope of one day becoming a professional athlete. Should his rugby ambitions not materialize, he has also expressed an interest in joining the British Army as a backup plan.

This story illustrates the dedication and ambition of young athletes like Tagicakibau, highlighting how commitment and hard work can open doors to opportunities. His journey serves as an inspiring reminder that pursuing one’s passion, regardless of challenges, can lead to fulfilling experiences and potential career paths.
