Young rugby talent Breyton Legge is determined to make a mark in the sport as he sets his sights on ambitious goals. At only 20 years old, Legge has already built an impressive portfolio, recently earning a spot in the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad. His journey through rugby has been marked by steady progress, starting from his early days at Suva Grammar School and Hamilton Boys High School, to representing the Chiefs under-18, Fiji U18 and U20, and playing for Waikato in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship.
Legge’s passion for rugby is deeply rooted in his family history. He attributes his love for the game to his father, Mike Legge, a former rugby player who is actively involved in Fiji Rugby. Breyton began his rugby journey at the age of four in Australia, initially playing rugby league before transitioning to rugby union once he moved to New Zealand and later to Fiji.
His talent became apparent when he played for Suva Grammar School’s U17 Deans winning team, which opened doors for a scholarship to Hamilton Boys High School. By this time, national selectors were taking notice, leading to his participation in the Fiji U18 and the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship, where he notably impressed against teams like Australia, England, and Ireland.
With steadfast support from his father, Legge remains grounded and focused on hard work. His recent inclusion in the Drua franchise marks a significant step forward in his career. Legge acknowledges the transition to Super Rugby is a challenge he is eager to embrace, stating he learns new things every day and must adapt quickly to meet the coaches’ expectations.
He expresses admiration for fellow players Emosi Tuqiri and Peni Ravai, both of whom have significantly influenced his development within the club. Legge’s immediate goal is to make his debut in the 2025 season, ideally in front of family and friends. Looking further ahead, he envisions playing for the Flying Fijians in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Despite having eligibility to represent multiple countries through his heritage—including Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, and England—Legge’s heart is set on representing Fiji, citing his family and cultural ties as strong motivators.
Recently, he participated in the Drua’s pre-season training camp in Kadavu, enjoying the community interaction and the experience of training in a different environment. With the team’s two-week break approaching, Legge is dedicated to maintaining his fitness and honing his skills.
