Lelean Memorial School’s under-17 rugby league player, Jovilisi Pagapo, is already setting lofty aspirations as he embarks on his rugby journey. This past weekend, the young second-rower played a pivotal role in leading his team to a thrilling 16-14 victory over Naitasiri Secondary School during the Fiji Secondary School South Eastern Zone competition held in Suva.
Pagapo expressed his dedication to the sport, saying, “I want to become the first in my family to represent the country at an international level.” Despite being new to rugby, he is committed to putting in the necessary effort to realize his dreams of donning the national jersey.
As Pagapo and his teammates gear up for the national quarterfinals set to take place in the West this Saturday, his school has established itself as a formidable force in the under-17 grade of their division. This opportunity will be crucial for Pagapo and his teammates to showcase their skills on a larger stage.
Similar to the journey of aspiring athletes like Ilaitia Tagicakibau, who recently made his debut at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, Pagapo’s story reflects the passion and determination of many young players in Fiji. Tagicakibau also dreams of representing his country and actively pursues his goals in rugby, showing that the ambition among youth athletes to rise through their respective sports is a shared experience.
The growing interest and commitment among these young players signify a bright future for rugby in Fiji. Many of them are focusing on their athletic paths while balancing critical educational commitments, revealing the empowering environment sports create in fostering resilience and growth.
Pagapo’s journey highlights the aspirational nature of youth sports, where hard work, determination, and support from family and communities play essential roles in turning dreams into reality. As he continues to develop his skills on the field, there is hope that he, like many other young athletes, will one day not only achieve his dreams but also inspire future generations to pursue their passions with equal fervor.
